" Johanna Dejager, Canada
As one of three girls growing up on the family farm, Johanna has an unusual introduction to strength training. "I used to have to carry the newborn calves from the field but the trouble was they had no control over their bladders," she says. "I would carry them over my shoulders and they'd urinate down my back."
Clearly there is some merit in lifting baby cows: Johanna went on to compete in her first bodybuilding contest in 1995 and in 2006 placed second in the world championships at lightweight.
These days her training methods are somewhat more sophisticated. She follows a high protein, low carbohydrate diet, getting energy from fruits and vegetables. "Every meal is based around protein," she says. "My favourite is red meat. I have always craved it since I was a kid growing up on the farm; I used to eat steak all the time."
She lifts heavy, bench pressing up to 245 lbs, dumbbell curling up to 60 lbs and squatting up to 300 lbs, phenomenal amounts for someone who competes at less than 125 lbs. Although no corner of her physique is lacking, Johanna is famous for her biceps, which rank among the best in the world.
.....
.... "I will always train," she says. "Nobody likes a big flabby ass!""

MuscleMag Magazine - February 2007 Issue, # 297 Canadian Corner comments by Garry Bartlett in regards to the Canadian World Qualifier 2006 competition. Page 254 & 255.

"...Without question one of Canada's top female bodybuilders is the indomitable Johanna Dejager (ON), who stacked up an impressive list of titles, easily winning the masters, lightweight and overall championships plus the women's Best Poser award. Dejager has one goal, to bring a medal back to Canada from the World Championships. When she walked out on stage she appeared well on her way to achieving her goal. She stunned the audience with her incredible condition. I don't think the word ripped adequately describes how lean and defined she was. She had taken her condition to a new level, shredded and striated from head to toe with abs of steel. She was the obvious winner in the lightweight category, leaving the other competitors to battle for second place..." |

MuscleMag Magazine - January 2005 Issue, Canadian Corner comments by Garry Bartlett in regards to the Canadian World Qualifier competition.
"... Dejager was her usual sensational self, combining exquisite shape and proportionate muscle into an artful showcase of raw female muscularity. I have watched her for several years and have never been disappointed with her performance or condition..." |

"...Dejager sports a raw, purer hardcore muscle density, radiating a look of strength and power. She had great control over her muscles, flexing them with ease while smoothly flowing from one pose to another.... a very satisfied Dejager was declared the winner." " ... I felt Dejager's combination of shape size, and rock-hard muscularity was too large a hurdle for either woman to overcome. So for the second time in her competitive career Johanna Dejager was declared the Canadian World Qualifier overall champion..."
MuscleMag - January 2004 Issue, 'Canadian Corner' - written by Garry Bartlett (in regards to the 2003 World Bodybuilding & Fitness Qualifier in Ancaster (Toronto) July 5, 2003).
"'Blonde Bomber' Dejager's spectacular condition included a set of incredibly defined abs. She was last years winner but took nothing for granted in getting ready for her title defense. ...I felt Dejager had the best overall condition and was much harder with more quality muscle density. When her name was announced in second I thought there must have been some kind of mistake. This decision totally threw me off as I fully expected Dejager to win. ...I can only conclude Dejager was penalized for her superior muscle density and extreme muscularity."
MuscleMag - November 2002, 'Canadian Corner' - written by Garry Bartlett (in regards to the World Bodybuilding & Fitness Qualifier in Halifax June 2002).
"... Last fall Canada sent an impressive team of women to the IFBB World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. ...Ultra hard Johanna Dejager found herself in the most hotly contested division. The middleweight class had some wicked physiques which shocked everyone. Johanna has amazing development, but despite her tremendous muscle density the best she could do was 10th. ...One has to wonder how some of them manage to achieve such size drug-free. ..."
MuscleMag - June 2002, 'Canadian Corner' - written by Garry Bartlett (in regards to the World Bodybuilding & Fitness Championships in Brazil October 2001).
"I was amazed at the quality of muscle density she displayed for a natural athlete. Her abdominal development... inch-deep ridges of squared-off abs... she should do very well in future international competitions."
MuscleMag - May 2002, 'Canadian Corner' - 'Canadian Profile' written by Garry Bartlett on Johanna Dejager (in regards to the World Bodybuilding & Fitness Qualifier in Winnipeg Sept 2001).
"Dejager's overall muscularity and tremendous density... capture the overall championship. Her superbly etched abs, which looked as if they were carved from stone, complemented her development perfectly."

Profile - Johanna Dejager
I was born in a small town just outside of Ottawa, Ontario (Canada) and spent my early years growing up in the surrounding area on a dairy farm.
With growing up on the farm came a lot of responsibilities. The chores were shared between the family members and there wasn't much time left over for any after school activities. So, for the athletic department, I did not develop a specific talent for any sport. But I was particularly good at certain track events that required brute strength i.e. shot put or discus but I recall soccer and field hockey something that I enjoyed during regular gym classes. I did alot of horseback riding, swimming and cycling during my spare time at home. I have always attributed my bodybuilding base from the hard work on the farm.
I didn't go to a gym until collage and just trained on and off for a few years until I went to a local bodybuilding show and friends convinced me to give it a try. So I decided to get a bit more serious.
What I enjoy the most from the weight training is the elated feeling after a work out - the bodybuilding shows are a bonus and a challenge. The competitions give me a goal and something to push me a little harder in the gym everytime I walk through those doors.
I will always train even if I do not compete in bodybuilding shows. I truly believe - 'what you put in is what you get out'. Bodybuilding is a great experience.
